Spring 2020 Update

I hope you all are surviving the pandemic and looking forward to when we can all return to our new norm. Whatever that may be. Things haven’t changed much here in Pagosa country. Yes, people are wearing masks, the toilet paper and paper towels are in a shortage and businesses in town are still, well, kinda closed. But, I still see plenty of Texas license plates running up and down the road. Speaking of Texans, two families (pictured above) came to El Rancho during our shoulder season and landed right on some perfect fishing. 4 adults and 6 kids (average age was 8). All caught fish and had such a blast they added 2 extra days to their trip. Teaching fly fishing is one of our favorite parts of guiding and this crew was hooked after day one.

I know it’s been a minute since I have sent out a newsletter. Honestly, we have been so busy on the ranches that every time I get a minute to sit and gather my thoughts, turn on the old computer, and start drafting a letter, something pulls me in another direction (work related) and yes, I walk away and swear I’ll finish it later.

Enough procrastinating. Let’s dive in.

Travel and the COVID

What will travel look like this summer? I wish I had an answer for that but luckily visiting the Rocky Mountains for a trout fishing excursion, is a lot easier than trying to get to Kamtchaka. So far we are planning for a business as usual approach for the summer in light of the current state of our country / world and this crazy virus. In all honesty, it’s been hard to promote travel to the general public while finding the need to stay sensitive to the virus which is affecting all of us, however, I couldn’t think of a better trip to take this summer than this. Total seclusion from the public on your own ranch. Meals prepared in your cabin or delivered to you . Private fly fishing on our waters with no one else in sight. We have also taken all the necessary steps to provide a safe environment for our customers. We have always strived to keep the cabins and lodges in best and cleanest condition for our clients. Rest assured, we have COVID-19 protocols in place. We will be providing masks and hand sanitizers to any groups that would like to take advantage of these items along with point and shoot thermometers for checking the staff or yourself if you feel concerned he or she might be feeling under the weather. Our house keepers will take the extra time to ensure every surface is disinfected after each group. This is a crucial step in stopping the spread of this virus so when you walk in the door of your cabin, it will be safe for all who enter.

It seems as if interest in domestic travel has increased over the past few weeks. People are realizing that traveling outside the country to populated areas is a bad idea. I hate it for the other business out there. The guided fishing industry is a challenging business, even in normal climates,  but passions for the sport and sharing those experiences keeps us powering through the tough times.

water conditions outlook

Alright, on to other business. Perhaps the next thing you might be focused on are the water conditions and what they are going to look like this season. Well, so far spring has been nice and cool in our neck of the woods. Temps have been averaging around the mid 60’s making for a nice slow runoff. Granted, I’m 99.9% sure we peaked on our flows in the Blanco back on the evening of May 1st. Yes, that’s early. Like a month early and the flows only reached a little over the 500 CFS mark. I’f Im right, I’m winning a running bet with one of my friends who thinks we will still see high water in June,  but unfortunately I don’t think that’s the case. Don’t get me wrong, who doesn’t like collecting $100 from one of their friends and rubbing it in when you knew all along you were right but in this situation I would have preferred it had gone the other way. This year’s snowpack was a hair below average and the lack of spring storms which we rely on for moisture to carry us through the summer just didn’t happen. Now that being said, we’re going to get our moisture. I just don’t know when it’s going to come. Hopefully it starts towards the end of July and pushes through August. There is still about 5 inches of snow pack sitting above 10,000 feet and that should carry us through June into July. Definitely a contrast from last year’s situation. The current flows now are around 250 CFS and we saw that last season steadily at the end of July. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that summer takes its time in arriving and our monsoon season kicks off at the end of July.

River improvements

On to other Ranch news. This past fall, we did an extensive maintenance project to the river at El Rancho Pinoso. Last year’s runoff was hard on the river and some of our structures, so we had our famous contractor, Elk River Construction, come in and create more holding water structures and pocket water features to add to the already existing world-class fishery. I’m really excited to fish the new features. They did a superb job with an already first class venue. Also on our radar is a scheduled improvement on the Weminuche Creek in early June. Lindner Ranches will be increasing the structure section of the Weminuche above the existing 2 miles of improved water adding roughly another mile stretch of water that will be transformed into more amazing fish habitat for anglers to enjoy this season.

So that’s the skinny folks. The calendar has some prime dates available for this season if you are feeling the need to take the domestic vacation I’m sure you will need once you are allowed to leave your home. We are ready for your visit. In times of uncertainty, there are some things you can be certain of at Lindner Ranches. There will be fish in the water, food on the table, elk in the meadows, flowers in the garden, hummingbirds on your porch and vacation memories that will last a lifetime.

Stay healthy friends
